Artificial intelligence may eventually become one of the biggest new sources of demand for public blockchains, according to a new research note from Grayscale. In “Why AI Needs Blockchain Technology,” Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl argues that increasingly autonomous AI agents will require financial and digital infrastructure that today's internet was not originally designed to provide.

The argument comes as the crypto industry is already moving toward this model. Coinbase has introduced infrastructure specifically for AI agents, Cloudflare is developing agent-focused wallets and payments, while MetaMask has released a wallet designed to let autonomous agents execute onchain transactions under predefined user limits.

Why AI Agents Could Need Blockchains

Most AI systems today can generate text, analyze information, write code, search databases, or recommend an action. But when money becomes involved, they frequently reach a boundary.

A human still has to create the account, enter card information, authorize payments, subscribe to services, or provide credentials. For genuinely autonomous agents, that architecture becomes restrictive.

Imagine an AI research agent that discovers a paid dataset it needs. Instead of asking its owner to buy access, the agent could pay a small amount automatically, retrieve the information, complete its task, and record the transaction.

A cloud-management agent could purchase additional computing capacity when demand rises. A trading agent could pay for market data. Two software agents could compensate one another for completing different parts of the same workflow.

Blockchain infrastructure is particularly suited to these interactions because it is programmable, operates continuously, and allows software to interact directly with assets and smart contracts. EtherWorld recently examined what could happen if every AI agent gets its own crypto wallet.

The Linux Foundation recently launched the x402 Foundation to develop open payment standards for AI agents. x402 allows payments to be attached directly to ordinary internet requests, giving software a potential way to pay for APIs, data, content and services automatically.

Wallets Could Turn AI Into Economic Actors

A traditional crypto wallet already allows a user to hold assets and interact with applications. An agent-oriented wallet adds another layer: rules determining what software is allowed to do with those assets.

An agent could receive permission to spend up to a certain amount, interact only with approved protocols, purchase specific categories of services, or execute transactions when predetermined conditions are met. Recent product launches show how quickly this architecture is developing.

MetaMask Agent Wallet allows agents to perform onchain actions while users define spending limits, risk settings and protocol restrictions. Instead of giving an AI model unrestricted control over a wallet, permissions can be enforced at the wallet layer.

Its recently announced Cloudflare Wallets are designed to let agents store stablecoins, receive funds and purchase web services. Cloudflare is also integrating wallets with x402 micropayments, creating a potential connection between AI agents, internet services and blockchain settlement.

Coinbase is building from another direction. Coinbase for Agents provides infrastructure through which agents can trade, manage portfolios and pay for digital resources while operating within defined guardrails.

Polygon has also introduced its Agent CLI for onchain AI agents, bundling wallets, payments, swaps, bridging, identity and blockchain data into a developer-focused toolkit. Taken together, these developments point toward a broader shift.

Stablecoins could be particularly important in this model. AI agents paying for a $0.02 API request or a $1 dataset generally need predictable units of account rather than assets whose purchasing power can change significantly between transactions.

Polygon, for example, has been upgrading its infrastructure around stablecoin and AI payments, reflecting the growing overlap between blockchain payment rails and autonomous software.

Identity, Trust & Decentralized Infrastructure

As AI-generated accounts become more capable, distinguishing humans from bots and trusted agents from malicious software may become increasingly difficult. Grayscale highlights digital identity as another area where blockchain technology could play a role.

An AI agent may need to prove which organization or user authorized it, what permissions it has, whether it has behaved reliably in previous interactions, and whether other applications should trust it. Ethereum is already experimenting with standards built around this problem.

ERC-8004 focuses on identity and reputation for AI agents, providing mechanisms through which autonomous services could become discoverable and build portable reputations across applications.

EtherWorld previously covered WYRIWE, or “What You Read Is What You Execute,” which explores verifiable input provenance for AI agents on Ethereum. The objective is to prove that the instruction a user intended to give an agent matches the instruction ultimately executed by the underlying model.

As Vitalik Buterin's discussion around sovereign AI highlighted, an agent may transact through decentralized infrastructure while its intelligence remains dependent on centralized model providers, servers, training pipelines or corporate APIs.

Advanced AI systems consume large quantities of compute, storage, bandwidth and data. Open blockchain markets could allow agents to purchase these resources dynamically rather than depending entirely on closed cloud platforms.

What This Could Mean for Ethereum

Ethereum could be one of the biggest beneficiaries if the AI-agent economy develops along the lines Grayscale describes. The network already provides a programmable financial environment where wallets, stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, identity systems and smart contracts can interact with one another.

The opportunity extends beyond simply giving an AI agent an ETH wallet. An agent could potentially maintain an onchain identity, hold USDC, pay for information, interact with DeFi, purchase compute, execute smart contracts and build a public reputation that follows it across applications.

When developers discuss Ethereum becoming broader global infrastructure, the users of that infrastructure increasingly include software as well as humans. Traditional payment companies, banks and cloud platforms are also building infrastructure for autonomous AI. Centralized systems can often provide faster execution, easier account recovery and simpler compliance.

Blockchain networks will therefore have to demonstrate that programmability, neutrality, global settlement and open interoperability provide enough value to justify their additional complexity. An agent capable of independently spending money creates risks around compromised models, malicious prompts, incorrect decisions and excessive permissions.
