Rupee Is Recovering. Why Is USDT Still Above ₹105 in India?

India's rupee rebounds toward ₹95, but USDC remains above ₹105 on Binance P2P, exposing the country's persistent crypto liquidity and regulatory challenges.

India's rupee has recovered sharply against the US dollar, but cryptocurrency traders appear to be living in a different financial reality. Between October 11 and October 14, 2026, the USD/INR exchange rate moved from approximately ₹96.78 to an intraday low near ₹94.72, following aggressive intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Yet on October 15, Binance's peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace showed USDC buy advertisements ranging from ₹104.99 to ₹107.77. Even the lowest advertised buying price represented a premium of approximately 10.8% against the ₹94.78 reference rate visible in market screenshots.

RBI's Dollar Intervention Strengthens the Rupee

On October 10, the RBI announced a special dollar window for three major public-sector oil marketing companies:

  1. Indian Oil Corporation
  2. Bharat Petroleum Corporation
  3. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation

Beginning October 12, these companies could obtain dollars through designated banks under an arrangement facilitated by the central bank. Oil purchases create substantial foreign currency demand. When oil companies buy large quantities of dollars, that demand can contribute to rupee depreciation, particularly during periods of elevated crude prices.

The RBI also introduced tighter foreign exchange derivative requirements to discourage speculative positioning and excessive dollar demand. Following these measures, the rupee strengthened considerably, moving toward ₹95 per dollar by October 14.

The intervention demonstrated the central bank's ability to influence short-term currency conditions. However, currency intervention has limitations.

The RBI can sell dollars, influence banking liquidity, and regulate foreign exchange transactions. It cannot directly resolve every pricing inefficiency within cryptocurrency markets.

EtherWorld previously explored this distinction in RBI Defends Rupee: Will India's Stablecoin Premium Rise?. The latest developments reinforce that argument. A stronger rupee does not automatically guarantee cheaper stablecoins.

Why Is USDC Still Trading Above ₹105?

Consider Binance P2P advertisements captured on October 15. The highest visible USDC sell advertisement offered ₹103.74, while the lowest displayed buy advertisement quoted ₹104.99. Other sellers advertised USDC at ₹105.95 and ₹107.77.

Against the earlier ₹94.78 USD/INR reference rate, the lowest buying quotation represented a difference of ₹10.21 per dollar. Someone purchasing 1,000 USDC at that advertised rate would pay ₹104,990, compared with ₹94,780 using the reference exchange rate.

That is a ₹10,210 difference before additional transaction costs. These figures are snapshots of advertised prices rather than verified completed transactions. They also come from different observation times and should not be interpreted as a synchronized market spread.

Nevertheless, the difference deserves scrutiny. USDC and USDT are designed to track the US dollar, but Indian P2P prices depend on local liquidity, available counterparties, payment restrictions, and market risk.

A premium normally creates opportunities for arbitrage. Traders could theoretically purchase digital dollars more cheaply in one market and sell them at higher prices elsewhere.

But India's banking restrictions, compliance requirements, transaction taxes, and foreign exchange rules can make those opportunities difficult to execute. The existence of a price difference does not mean traders can legally or economically capture it.

Efforts to improve market access are therefore important. EtherWorld previously covered Coinbase Introduces USDC-INR Trading for India, examining how direct trading pairs could reduce conversion friction.

Is India's Crypto Regulation Making Digital Dollars Expensive?

India has created an unusual cryptocurrency environment. Digital asset transactions face taxation and increasingly detailed reporting obligations, yet the country still lacks a comprehensive regulatory framework addressing all aspects of stablecoin trading and infrastructure.

Qualifying virtual digital asset gains are generally subject to a 30% tax, while specified transfers face a 1% tax deducted at source. These measures have legitimate revenue and compliance objectives. However, they can also reduce trading capital efficiency, particularly for market makers executing frequent transactions.

EtherWorld examined expanding reporting obligations in India Issues New Crypto Tax Rules From 2026. Meanwhile, questions concerning oversight remain unresolved. In Will India Regulate Crypto? What to Expect From Monsoon Session, EtherWorld discussed proposals for interim regulatory structures and stronger investor protection.

The challenge is not necessarily excessive regulation. It is uncertainty about how legitimate businesses should access liquidity and operate compliantly. India has an enormous potential digital asset user base. As discussed in India Is Crypto's Largest Market, Says Coinbase CEO, adoption has attracted growing attention from international exchanges.

Stablecoins also serve purposes beyond speculation. Indian freelancers, developers, startups, and internationally connected businesses may seek digital dollars for payments and settlement. EtherWorld addressed this distinction in Does India Need Stablecoins When UPI Already Works?.

As explored in Can Stablecoins Replace International Bank Transfers?, stablecoins could complement conventional banking infrastructure rather than replace it. But when acquiring digital dollars requires paying substantial premiums, those benefits become less accessible.

India's Two Dollar Markets Need a Closer Look

The contrast between the conventional dollar rate and P2P stablecoin prices highlights a growing policy dilemma. India has a regulated foreign exchange system capable of responding to central bank intervention. Alongside it exists a digital asset marketplace where dollar-backed tokens can trade at considerably higher rupee prices.

The official exchange rate does not measure every cost of obtaining digital dollars, and P2P advertisements do not establish the true value of the rupee. However, persistent differences may indicate costly barriers between financial systems.

EtherWorld recently examined the US Eyes Global Stablecoin Push to Defend Dollar, highlighting how dollar-backed digital assets increasingly intersect with global payments and monetary influence. Private businesses are exploring similar opportunities. In Stripe Closures Push Startups Toward Stablecoins, EtherWorld examined why companies are considering alternative payment rails. India risks making participation in these emerging systems unnecessarily expensive if legitimate users cannot access competitive, compliant liquidity.

India needs clearer rules, transparent liquidity channels, effective consumer protection, and predictable compliance obligations. Those improvements would not eliminate every premium. Market demand, counterparty risk, banking costs, and payment restrictions would still influence prices.

The RBI may successfully bring the conventional dollar below ₹95 while Indian crypto traders continue encountering USDC advertisements above ₹105. That does not prove the rupee's recovery is artificial. It demonstrates that currency stability and cryptocurrency market efficiency are different challenges. And until India addresses both, a stronger rupee will not necessarily mean cheaper digital dollars.
