Crypto User Loses $100K to Address Poisoning Scam
A crypto user lost $100K in an address poisoning scam after sending 101,100 USDT to a fake wallet address planted 66 days earlier.

Apply Now →A cryptocurrency user lost around $100,000 after transferring 101,100 USDT to a fake wallet address that was made to appear authentic. In order to make it simpler for the address to show up in the victim's transaction history, it had been planted 66 days before through a sequence of small fake transactions. Lookonchain's on-chain experts discovered the occurrence, which demonstrates how fraudsters utilise user patterns and well-known wallet addresses to reroute big payments without actually compromising a wallet.
How the $100K Address Poisoning Scam Worked
Instead of hacking into the victim's wallet, the scam relied on making a fake address appear familiar. In order to progressively add the poisoned address to the victim's transaction history, the attacker first generated a lookalike address and sent little transactions from it.
The attacker had time to make the address seem authentic because it was there for 66 days. The identical-looking address may easily be confused for the intended recipient when the victim later arranged the 101,100 USDT transfer.
This is crypto address poisoning's main risk. It is not always necessary for the attacker to have access to the victim's seed phrase or private keys. Rather, the fraud takes advantage of the fact that consumers frequently choose addresses from lists of recent transactions, especially when handling money on a mobile device.
101,100 USDT Sent to the Wrong Address
In the end, 101,100 USDT was sent to the poisoned address by the victim. The money was no longer going to the wallet the victim had planned to pay after the transaction was verified on-chain.
Lookonchain identified the suspicious transaction and alerted the cryptocurrency community to the situation. The fact that the stolen USDT was then transformed into 52.8 ETH demonstrates how swiftly con artists can transfer and reorganise stolen assets after obtaining them.
Additionally, the situation demonstrates why it is insufficient to just verify a wallet address's start or end. It is possible to intentionally create a poisoned address that mimics an address that a user has previously interacted with. For this reason, a fast visual comparison could lead to a false sense of security.

Why Recent Transaction Lists Can Become a Trap
Although it's convenient to see recent transaction details, this example demonstrates how scammers can use that convenience against consumers. The attacker created an address that would appear familiar when the victim was prepared to give money by setting up a fake address far in advance of the significant transfer.
Because of this, mobile users are especially at risk when they rely significantly on recent-recipient lists or shortened address displays. One thoughtless click is not the only issue; the poisoned address had already been set up beforehand.

Full Address Checks Are the Key Defence
Lookonchain's warning is simple, i.e., before authorising a big transfer, users should confirm the full wallet address, character by character. When an attacker has purposefully produced a lookalike address, it is insufficient to check just a few visible characters.
Instead of choosing recipients based on recent transaction history, users should also rely on saved addresses in their address books for large transactions. Before transferring a much greater amount, sending a modest test transaction might add a layer of security.
When combined with investigations into larger crypto-fraud networks, the significance of confirming the destination of cash becomes even more evident.
