The Growing Trust Crisis in India's Crypto Ecosystem

WazirX, BitBNS and CoinDCX raise difficult questions about crypto security, investor protection, exchange accountability and India's regulatory framework.

India's crypto sector faces a challenging issue. When big platforms deal with security lapses, withdrawal disputes, and allegations that cast doubt on accountability, can investors still have faith in exchanges?

While WazirX, BitBNS, and CoinDCX's experiences highlight distinct issues, they all have one thing in common. Assurances that their money is secure are not enough for investors. When an exchange doesn't live up to expectations, they need clear accountability, fair disclosures, and trustworthy channels for seeking compensation.

From WazirX to BitBNS to CoinDCX

For the Indian crypto market, the July 2024 WazirX cyberattack was a game-changer. Digital assets worth over $230 million were taken from a multisignature wallet connected to the exchange.

Users have concerns about retrieving their assets and allocating losses as a result of the incident, which also interrupted operations. In order to resolve its obligations to impacted users, WazirX subsequently pursued a reorganisation procedure. Its official cyberattack update described the incident and the steps taken in response.

BitBNS raises a distinct set of issues. Investors sought regulatory action and a CBI probe from the Delhi High Court due to withdrawal issues and purported disparities in asset valuations. The limitations of the current legal environment for cryptocurrency exchanges were highlighted by the court's decision to reject the requested relief. The dispute, which was discussed in Delhi High Court Rejects Plea for Crypto Regulation in BitBNS Case, shows how challenging it may be for investors to find a workable solution.

CoinDCX has been under investigation on a number of fronts. The exchange revealed a security violation involving an internal operating account in July 2025; the estimated losses were $44 million. The company stated that it will use its own reserves to cover the losses and that consumer wallets were unaffected.

More recently, transfers involving wallet addresses that had previously been compromised raised further concerns regarding the wallet's transaction history. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT questioned whether later transactions corroborated CoinDCX's statement that the activity was caused by outdated addresses.

The company's founders were involved in a case of impersonation fraud. While CoinDCX insisted that impersonators, rather than its own exchange operations, were involved in the alleged fraud, the founders were granted bail. CoinDCX Founders Questioned in Fraud Case, Company Accuses Impersonation Scam, and CoinDCX Founders Granted Bail in Alleged Fraud Case all discussed the developments. CoinDCX Announces ₹100 Crore Cyber Safety Push After Fraud Case Fallout details the exchange's subsequent announcement of a ₹100 crore cyber safety project.

These cases are not identical. A cyberattack, a withdrawal dispute and an impersonation scam involve different facts and responsibilities. What connects them is the need for evidence that investors can examine instead of assurances they must simply accept.

Where Does Accountability Begin & End?

It is not reasonable to hold an exchange accountable for every criminal who exploits its name. However, even if it claims that its systems are secure, it cannot expect consumers to cease asking questions.

Clear communication is the first step in accountability. When a breach happens, users should be promptly informed about what happened, which systems were impacted, whether customer assets were compromised, and how the business plans to handle the fallout. Confirmed results must be separated from preliminary evaluations if an inquiry is still ongoing.

Although proof of reserves can be used to determine whether reported assets exist, it does not automatically verify that security controls are in place or that all liabilities have been disclosed. Along with significant security audit results, exchanges should offer independently verified information on assets and liabilities.

Responsibility also extends to recovery. Investors need documented complaint procedures, realistic timelines and regular updates on unresolved claims. When an exchange attributes losses to an attacker, a third party or an impersonator, its explanation should be supported by evidence wherever possible.

The aim is not to presume wrongdoing. It is to make accountability measurable, whether a failure involves an exchange, a technology provider or an unrelated criminal.

Is India's Regulatory Grey Area Making Things Worse?

Under the framework of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, India has implemented compliance rules for suppliers of virtual digital asset services. Relevant companies must adhere to the relevant Financial Intelligence Unit India registration, reporting, and record-keeping requirements. These regulations, however, fall short of providing a thorough framework for investor safety on cryptocurrency exchanges.

Investor protection and anti-money laundering compliance deal with distinct threats. When consumers encounter issues with withdrawals, disputed losses, or concerns over custody arrangements, fulfilling reporting requirements does not always ensure a clear remedy.

The BitBNS controversy serves as a reminder of how difficult it can be to get help when the legal system does not offer a clear path for all complaints pertaining to cryptocurrency. Investors may seek appropriate legal remedies, but it can be difficult to find the appropriate authority and get a result.

India needs more precise regulations outlining exchange obligations, custody requirements, disclosure obligations, and protocols for managing security or insolvency incidents. Additionally, investors should be aware of which authorities are in charge of each kind of complaint and how instances that remain unresolved can be escalated.

Meaningful precautions should be the goal, without considering all cryptocurrency businesses as intrinsically fraudulent or implying that legislation can reduce investment risk.

Can Indian Crypto Exchanges Rebuild Investor Trust?

When exchanges' credibility is put to the test, trust will be determined by their actions. New security measures and public declarations are important, but their usefulness depends on their execution and results that can be independently verified.

Exchanges should release independent evaluations of their financial standing, security measures, and custody agreements on a regular basis. Instead of using a reserve amount as evidence that all risks have been managed, they ought to describe what these evaluations cover.

Clear guidelines for communication and reparation are also necessary. Exchanges should report on the status of unresolved complaints, reveal incident timeframes, and provide information on how impacted consumers can pursue recovery. When client funds are lost, compensation agreements should be recorded.

Operational security needs to go beyond the main wallets of customers. Examining access controls, key management, third-party integrations, and deprecated address monitoring are all necessary. The current issues with CoinDCX show why official explanations and transaction records need to be looked at jointly.

In the meanwhile, policymakers must to create accessible channels for handling investor complaints and more defined roles for pertinent authorities. Exchanges should safeguard sensitive security data while assisting independent audits and inquiries.

Unquestioning trust is not necessary for India's cryptocurrency ecosystem. It requires confidence that is built via openness, proof, and constant responsibility. Investor confidence in the sector will remain precarious until they comprehend how their investments are safeguarded and what occurs when something goes wrong.
