Binance Faces $6.3B Crypto Hack, $3B in Assets Frozen
Binance reports a $6.3B security breach linked to a compromised DevOps laptop. Tether, Circle and other partners freeze $3B as investigations continue.
Binance has reported a major security breach with an estimated impact of $6.3 billion, potentially making it the largest cryptocurrency hack in history. The exchange temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals after detecting unauthorized transactions, while Tether, Circle, and other blockchain partners helped freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets.
In an October 30 statement, Binance said its preliminary investigation suggests that a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop allowed an attacker to access a service container and initiate unauthorized withdrawals. The exchange found no evidence that wallet private keys had been exposed.
Binance Security Breach: What Happened?
Binance's initial investigation points to a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. According to the exchange, the attacker may have used this access to enter a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The distinction is significant. Rather than confirming that cryptocurrency private keys were stolen, Binance has identified a possible compromise involving its operational infrastructure.
Its investigation has not yet established the complete attack sequence or disclosed the specific permissions exploited. Onchain analysts initially identified billions of dollars in suspicious transfers across cryptocurrency networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and TRON.
Estimates varied as investigators examined different wallets and transactions before Binance published its approximately $6.3 billion impact figure. The incident highlights how compromised internal systems can become a serious security risk even when cryptographic wallet credentials remain protected.
Similar concerns emerged during the Keystone wallet customer-data breach, where unauthorized access exposed sensitive customer information without compromising wallet private keys. The broader cryptocurrency industry has increasingly faced attacks targeting employees, infrastructure providers, and operational processes.
EtherWorld previously examined these evolving methods in How Lazarus Group Became One of Crypto's Biggest Security Threats, highlighting the growing importance of trusted access in sophisticated cryptocurrency attacks. However, Binance has not confirmed who was responsible for the latest incident.
Binance's initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.
The estimated total impact sits at around $6.3B. We have worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with ~$3 billion frozen on-chain so far.
Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation is complete.As an immediate precaution, Binance has:
- temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks are completed;
- revoked the affected address authorisation;
- engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.
Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice.

Tether, Circle & Ripple Freeze $3B in Assets
Major stablecoin issuers responded quickly as suspicious funds moved across blockchain networks. Tether froze approximately $1.57 billion in USDT linked to the incident, while Circle blocked more than $800 million in USDC.
Binance co-founder Yi He also reported that Ripple had frozen roughly $200 million in affected assets. Additional coordination with blockchain partners increased the total frozen amount to approximately $3 billion, according to Binance's October 30 update.
These interventions demonstrate how centralized stablecoin issuers can restrict certain token balances when responding to security incidents and legal requests. Tether has previously taken similar action during DeFi exploits.
In April, the issuer froze $3.29 million linked to the Rhea Finance exploit, illustrating the role of issuer-level intervention in limiting attackers' access to stolen assets. Blockchain investigators have also contributed to recovery efforts.
EtherWorld recently covered how ZachXBT uncovered a Chinese cryptocurrency laundering network linked to funds from the 2025 Bybit hack, helping trigger a Tether freeze. However, freezing assets does not automatically mean they have been recovered or returned to their rightful owners.
Asset recovery may require coordination among issuers, exchanges, blockchain intelligence firms, and law enforcement authorities. For Binance, the immediate challenge is determining how much of the reported $6.3 billion exposure can ultimately be secured and recovered.

Binance SAFU Fund, Withdrawals & Market Impact
Binance has assured customers that their funds remain safe despite the estimated $6.3 billion security incident. The exchange said it would use its SAFU fund and corporate resources to cover all losses.
Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, who no longer manages the company, also expressed confidence that customers would be fully protected. As an immediate precaution, Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks were conducted.
The exchange also revoked affected address authorizations and began coordinating with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence companies. These emergency measures resemble actions taken following other cryptocurrency infrastructure attacks.
In September, Bitget suspended withdrawals following unauthorized wallet transfers, while the Taiko network halted block production after a security breach earlier this year. Although the underlying vulnerabilities differed, each incident demonstrated how emergency restrictions can become necessary when critical security controls are uncertain.
The Binance breach also affected market sentiment. Bitcoin briefly fell below $79,000, while Ether and BNB declined as investors reacted to concerns about exchange security and potential liquidity exposure. The incident has additionally renewed debate around exchange transparency and customer protection.
Binance has promised to publish an updated Proof of Reserves following remediation. However, Proof of Reserves primarily concerns the existence of reported assets and does not independently guarantee that an exchange has adequate cybersecurity controls or sufficient assets to meet every liability.
Crypto Security Risks & What Comes Next?
If the full estimated $6.3 billion impact represents stolen assets, the Binance incident would exceed the approximately $1.5 billion stolen during the February 2025 Bybit hack. However, the estimated impact should not be confused with the final unrecoverable loss.
Approximately $3 billion has already been frozen, and further recovery efforts remain underway. The incident adds to a broader pattern of security failures involving exchanges, applications, and third-party infrastructure.
In June, Polymarket experienced a frontend compromise involving a malicious third-party dependency, while EtherWorld's coverage of Drift Protocol's recovery plan examined the difficulties of rebuilding operations after a major exploit. These incidents involve different attack methods, but collectively underline the need for stronger access management, operational monitoring, infrastructure isolation, and incident-response planning.
Binance has promised a detailed technical post-mortem once its investigation is complete. The report is expected to clarify the attack mechanism, affected systems, and measures introduced to prevent similar incidents.
The exchange also plans to publish updated reserve information after completing remediation. For now, the cryptocurrency industry faces another major test of whether exchanges, stablecoin issuers, and investigators can coordinate effectively during a large-scale security emergency.
