HSBC RedCoin Launches for 3.3M PayMe Users

On October 23, 2026, HSBC introduced RedCoin, its stablecoin backed by the Hong Kong dollar, enabling over 3.3 million PayMe customers to make regulated digital currency payments. Customers can use the new service to pay participating merchants or send money to other users by activating a digital wallet within the current app.

RedCoin is designed for daily transactions and was issued under a license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Later this year, HSBC intends to expand its use to tokenised investments through its Hong Kong mobile banking app.

HSBC RedCoin Arrives on PayMe for Everyday Payments

HSBC RedCoin is the bank's first stablecoin and is traded under the ticker RCHKD. PayMe's implementation lets the bank reach its existing clientele without requiring them to use a different payment app.

The bank is introducing the service gradually. Over 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to activate a stablecoin wallet right within the app. The deployment will start on October 23, and activation will be available over the next few days.

RedCoin can be used by customers to pay participating shops and make person-to-person transfers to friends and family. More than 100,000 merchants accept PayMe payments from the service.

To activate the wallet, users do not need to maintain a minimum balance. The goal of the well-known program interface is to enable the new payment method without substantially altering how users already utilise PayMe.

Hong Kong Dollar Backing and HKMA Licensing

RedCoin is denominated in Hong Kong dollars and issued under HSBC’s stablecoin issuer licence granted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in April 2026. The licence operates under Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance, which establishes regulatory requirements for stablecoin issuers.

HSBC states that every RedCoin will be backed at all times by high-quality, highly liquid assets held in segregated accounts. The stablecoin is designed to be redeemable at a one-to-one rate against the Hong Kong dollar.

A key component of the product's design is this reserve arrangement. RedCoin is backed by assets held independently to support the issued tokens rather than depending on market demand to maintain its intended value.

In order to comply with Hong Kong's stablecoin requirements, HSBC has also integrated financial crime measures into the service. RedCoin will be kept secure via the bank's digital asset custody service.

The debut comes after months of planning with potential consumers and regulators. Almost 100 workers participated in HSBC's internal testing, which covered everything from token issuance and wallet activation to actual transfers.

HSBC Plans to Expand RedCoin Into Tokenized Investments

Later in 2026, HSBC plans to expand RedCoin beyond PayMe by integrating stablecoin wallet features into the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App.

Customers will be able to use RedCoin to subscribe to tokenised investment products thanks to the planned expansion. One of the products anticipated to be made available through this service is an upcoming share class of HSBC's Hong Kong dollar money market fund.

Within the bank's current digital banking environment, the planned investment function will link stablecoin payments with financial product access. Through HSBC's mobile platform, customers will have access to investment products and be able to use the stablecoin for transactions.

HSBC Orion for institutional digital bonds, HSBC Gold Token for retail customers, and its Tokenised Deposit Service for wholesale payments are already part of the bank's larger digital asset plan.

While HSBC has stated ambitions to investigate further uses for business and institutional clients, RedCoin expands this activity into retail payments.

RedCoin Strengthens HSBC’s Digital Asset Strategy in Hong Kong

The introduction of HSBC aligns with the growth of Hong Kong's regulated stablecoin industry. Since 2022, the bank has taken part in projects of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, including Project Ensemble and the e HKD Plus Pilot Program.

RedCoin incorporates these advancements into a consumer payment solution that is accessible through a reputable banking network. Tokenised investments are envisioned as the next phase after its initial concentration on regular transfers and merchant transactions.

To commemorate the launch, HSBC is also providing special PayMe transaction reductions and RewardCash perks.

The bank's first objective right now is integrating RedCoin into its retail payment services before expanding its application to other goods and clientele. The stablecoin's intended growth into institutional and wholesale applications may expand its use beyond personal payments.

As of right now, the launch integrates HSBC RedCoin into PayMe's current payment ecosystem; tokenised investment subscriptions and the Hong Kong mobile banking app will comprise the next stage of development.
