What Is Telegram’s .gram Domain Plan?
Nowadays, the primary purpose of a Telegram username is to make it easier for users to locate you. Your Telegram profile can be accessed by others if you have a username like @durov. With a.gram domain, Telegram now hopes to investigate whether that same identity may be used outside of the app.
A username might turn into a website under the suggested concept. Thus, @durov might become durov.gram, and names like pro.gram or insta.gram might become memorable web addresses. By connecting with Telegram's current capabilities and hosting interactive content, these websites might offer users more than just a profile page.
The fact that this is still a proposal and not a final product is crucial. As part of the 2026 round for new internet domain extensions, Telegram submitted its application for.gram to ICANN. Approval is not certain, and the application must still pass the necessary procedures.
Nevertheless, since Telegram is not beginning from scratch, the proposal is worth considering. It already has a sizable ecosystem of digital assets, usernames, profiles, channels, Mini Apps, and payments. These components might be unified under a single, recognisable identity with a.gram domain.
Because of this, the idea is more intriguing than just a new domain extension. Telegram may be expanding the use of something that consumers are already familiar with on the internet. Most new self-custodial TON wallets last week came from small invites (41.8%) and CEX (25.1%).

Why .gram Looks Surprisingly Web3-Native
For years, Web3 has been attempting to answer an easy question, i.e., how can users have a digital identity that is more user-friendly than a lengthy wallet address? By enabling users to use understandable names rather than complex sequences of numbers and letters, initiatives like the Ethereum Name Service have made blockchain addresses simpler to comprehend.
Telegram's solution to the same concept is far simpler. It already contains the login that users use on a daily basis, rather than requesting that they create a new blockchain identity. The business may be able to expand that well-known username into a web address.
That distinction might be crucial for adoption. It is not necessary to comprehend wallets or blockchain networks to realise that a person's website might be their Telegram username. The familiar experience can continue while the technology stays in the background.
Telegram's collectable usernames are a step in the right direction. Some usernames have worth beyond just identifying an account since they can be owned and exchanged inside the TON ecosystem. By giving the identification a destination on the larger web, the.gram notion might advance that idea. TON’s DeFi ecosystem saw TVL surge past $300 million in 2025 and again in 2026, before easing back to roughly $260 million, highlighting how quickly activity has grown around the network.

This is when distribution, Telegram's greatest advantage, comes into play. Telegram does not need to create a new audience for.gram because it already has over a billion users. Potential consumers are already seated inside the platform if the feature is made available.
Compared to most Web3 identification efforts, that is a pretty different place to start. They must convince users to set up a wallet, comprehend a new naming scheme, and then locate locations where that identification can be utilised. Telegram might leverage something that people currently use on a daily basis to present the same concept.
In my view, this is where .gram could become genuinely important. Telegram does not necessarily have to teach people about Web3 identity. It can simply make the experience useful and let users discover the technology behind it later. Telegram vs Web3: Convenience or Real Ownership?

This is important since one of the main concepts of Web3 is ownership. While traditional domain systems function through registries and controlled organisations, blockchain-based name systems aim to provide consumers with more autonomy over their digital identities.
As a result, Telegram's.gram plan might fall somewhere in between Web3 and the traditional internet. It might connect to Telegram's blockchain-based ecosystem and provide the ease of use of a standard domain. That might be far simpler for people to handle than having to decide between various identity systems.

And this is where I believe the industry occasionally asks the wrong question. When they open Telegram, most users are not searching for a fully decentralised identity system. They want a page where people can discover them, an easy-to-remember name, and a link they can share.
Many users might not care if the underlying technology resembles Web3 or traditional domains if.gram can offer that experience. They will only perceive it as an improved version of their current username.
Decentralisation is still relevant despite this. It only draws attention to the trade-off that Telegram may be making. Incorporating blockchain-based ownership and other Web3 elements into the experience without requiring people to understand them might put ease and scale first.
That might be a wise strategy for widespread acceptance. The advantage becomes more apparent while the technology is less obvious.
What Crypto Should Learn From Telegram’s Move
It's possible that the most important lesson from.gram is unrelated to domains. It concerns how Web3 should be accessible to regular users. Although cryptocurrency has developed a lot of helpful infrastructure, users sometimes still need to comprehend wallets, networks, addresses, and other ideas before they can understand the significance of any of it.
Telegram is able to go in the other direction. Start with something that people are familiar with, like a username, then progressively expand on it. Before using the technology, the user does not need to become familiar with it.

However, Telegram is addressing Web3 identification through diffusion and simplicity rather than through technical sophistication, which makes the path itself noteworthy.
A Web3-style identification could feel less like a novel technology and more like a typical aspect of using the internet if the organisation manages the user experience well.
And that may be Telegram's biggest Web3 opportunity yet, i.e., not teaching people how Web3 works, but making them use it without having to think about it.
